Transformation
Our strategy to transform St. Boniface Hospital
St. Boniface Hospital has always strived to provide quality care to its patients and there have been significant improvements in the past. However, in 2008, the hospital Board of Directors and Executive Team agreed that going forward, the organization’s mission, vision and activities would be clearly focused on quality and a strategic plan was developed, identifying how we proposed to realize real and sustainable change to our processes. Our objective is “to deliver the safest and highest quality of care to every patient, every encounter, every day.”
Dr. Tétreault, President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital, believes strongly in the new plan. “We want to provide absolutely the best care possible, for everyone. St. Boniface is known for its excellent patient care, but there is a lot more we can do. Our goal is to improve continuously. We want every patient who comes to St. Boniface to feel confidant that he or she is receiving the best care.”
Transformation at St-Boniface Hospital is about using Lean* methods, information and the experience of patients, staff and physicians to teach people to see, think and act differently about their work. It is about reducing waste of time, of steps, of resources, to continue to make improvements to our organization.
Already used in other industries and leading healthcare organizations, Lean methods have dramatically improved the efficiency and quality of healthcare, increasing patient satisfaction and staff engagement. The implementation of Lean methods does not mean that we compromise standards or that health care becomes less personal. It is about the patient!
Through Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs) – a hands-on, 4.5-day workshop – staff, physicians, patient representatives and hospital partners come together to develop, test, evaluate, and implement ideas to improve processes. The goal is to eliminate waste and non-value added activities for patients, staff and physicians.
* Lean – commonly associated with Japanese manufacturing, particularly Toyota Production System, based on the work of quality expert W. Edwards Deming who taught that managers should focus on improving the production process and building quality into the product in the first place.

Our four strategic objectives are:
- Increase patient satisfaction
- Increase staff engagement
- Improve clinical effectiveness and safety (patient safety, mortality)
- Improved efficiency and financial performance (making better use of our human and financial resources)
To achieve these objectives, St. Boniface implemented ‘Lean Transformation’ or the Transformation Plan.
The plan calls for the use of Lean. Lean concepts use data, proven methodologies and the experience of patients, staff and physicians to determine what processes add value and which do not. We expect that these concepts along with other quality improvement initiatives will make St. Boniface a better place for patients, staff and physicians.
Many industries including health care already use Lean strategies. In these facilities, lean strategies have dramatically improved efficiency and quality of health care, increased patient satisfaction and staff engagement. The implementation of Lean strategies does not mean that we will compromise standards or that health care will become less personal.
Our key principles:
- Patients, families, staff and physicians are involved
- The hospital is committed to no loss of employment
- There will be funding and investments to affect change
- Commitment, innovation, inspiration and discipline are expected
