St-Boniface Hospital Launches Web-Based Pre-Natal Virtual Tour
Winnipeg (March 1, 2012) – St-Boniface Hospital’s Woman & Child Program is pleased to announce the launch of its new web-based pre-natal virtual tour.
“This 20-minute educational and informational video is a first for women’s health in Winnipeg, and was developed in response to women’s requests to make a wide variety of pre-natal information available conveniently,” according to Dr. Michel Tétreault, President and Chief Executive Officer of St-Boniface Hosopital.
“St-Boniface Hospital currently offers expecting families a monthly in-person session with nurses and anesthesiologists present to answer questions and help prepare for giving birth at St-Boniface Hospital, and we will continue to do so, says Lisa Albensi, Program Director, Woman & Child, St-Boniface Hospital.
“However, these in-person sessions are attended by only 18 per cent of parents who give birth at St-Boniface Hospital. There are 5400 babies born every year at St-Boniface, and more than 1/3 of parents are from outside Winnipeg, so the in-person sessions are reaching only a small number of families. We want to make pre-natal information available to everyone coming to St-Boniface in addition to providing them with an opportunity to see our birthing and postpartum areas,” says Albensi.
“The web-based pre-natal information gives everyone an opportunity to prepare for their child’s birth, and to know what to expect when they arrive to give birth to their child,” says Kris Robinson, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Mid-wife, as well as the project’s coordinator.
The on-line virtual tour is divided into 11 chapters ranging in length from one to three minutes. Chapters can be viewed separately depending on the viewer’s interest. The video covers topics including preparing for birth, when to come to the hospital, labour and pain control options, caesarian sections, baby care, after-birth care, neo-natal intensive care, going home and more.
“First-time parents may want to view the whole video, while others may want to view specific chapters,” says Robinson. “Our newly developed web site includes additional information that families can read, and provides links to related information such as public health programs.”
The on-line prenatal informational video was developed by St-Boniface Hospital’s Woman and Child team and Visual Productions, and was funded by the St-Boniface Hospital Foundation. “We are grateful the community and Foundation donors for their support in developing this DVD,” says Albensi. “The production of this important educational tool would not have been possible otherwise.”
“We are proud to play a small role in improving health care for expectant families, new mothers and their children,” says Chuck LaFlèche, President and CEO, St-Boniface Hospital. “It is thanks to the support of our donors that we are able to make a difference in the Hospital’s ability to provide life-changing care to the people of Manitoba.”
In addition to being available on-line, copies of the DVD will be distributed outside Winnipeg to areas where Internet access is limited, such as northern nursing stations, so that parents may watch it before coming to St-Boniface Hospital for the birth of their child.

Minister Officially Opens New Mother Child Units At St. Boniface Hospital
$2 Million Renovations and Expansion of Women’s Health Services
Winnipeg – Manitoba Health Minister Theresa Oswald today officially opened the
newly renovated maternity units at St. Boniface Hospital, part of a $2 million project to
renovate and expand maternity and gynaecology services at St. Boniface Hospital.
“Women and families have spoken clearly about their wishes to have appropriate space
while going through the challenges and joys of childbirth, and we believe these
renovations go a long way to meeting these needs,” Minister Oswald said.
The first two phases of renovations to St. Boniface Hospital’s mother child units include:
* Increase in the number of postpartum (after birth) maternity beds from 27 to 30
* Increase in the number of postpartum private maternity rooms from 3 to 23; and
* Phase three, currently underway, includes the relocation of the gynaecological in-patient
unit, and development of 5 additional private rooms which will also benefit women and
their families.
The new Mother Child units at St. Boniface Hospital began accepting patients during the
second week of June.
“Obstetrical volumes in Winnipeg have increased significantly over the past five years
and are projected to continue to increase,” Lori Lamont, WRHA Vice President and
Chief Nursing Officer said. “These new spaces along with the new birth centre and beds
at HSC allow us to more fully meet this demand and do so in a manner that respects
choice and privacy for women and their families.”
“Women have been telling us that our birthing spaces were in great need of
modernization for several years,” Dr. Michel Tétreault, President and CEO, St. Boniface
Hospital, said. “Private rooms are a welcome service for women, and will allow more
space for family support during the woman’s stay in hospital. We are grateful to the
Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Health Region for their support of the women
and child health programs at St. Boniface Hospital.”
The new expanded maternity ward at St. Boniface complements other important birthing
and women’s health projects in Winnipeg, including a new birth centre in South
Winnipeg expected to open this summer and a new Women’s Hospital at Health
Sciences Centre for which construction is anticipated to start shortly.

Premier Officially Opens New Cardiac Sciences Building in I.H. Asper Institute
$40.3 million state-of-the-art facility to start receiving patients later this month
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger and Health Minister Theresa Oswald today officially opened the new cardiac sciences surgical services at St. Boniface Hospital’s I.H. Asper Institute.
“Patients, families and staff will benefit enormously from this new facility,” said Premier Selinger. “This new leading-edge, modern cardiac centre of excellence will support our cardiac specialists in providing first-class quality care to Manitobans when they need it while also providing more space for patient and family privacy, state-of-the-art medical equipment and appropriate space for staff.”
Arlene Wilgosh, President & CEO of the Winnipeg Health Region said the Cardiac Sciences staff will now have a work environment that matches the high calibre of their skills. “We are very fortunate to have the talented cardiac care team that we do at St-Boniface Hospital,” said Wilgosh. “They now have ample resources and physical space to provide excellent cardiac care to their patients.”
Patients’ families and friends will also benefit from the new space, which features family rooms, complete with ample natural light and comforting colours.
“Waiting for news of a loved one who is undergoing critical cardiac surgery is an extremely emotional and difficult experience,” said Wilgosh. “We hope the new family rooms will help friends and relatives cope with the stress and give them hope during a trying time.”
The newly renovated 41,000 square foot space, which meets Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver Standards, includes:
- An expanded 33-bed cardiac inpatient unit;
- A dedicated 15-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, that includes an isolation/protection bed;
- More private rooms for patients;
- Increased private family spaces; and
- Outpatient clinic for pre-surgery visits and post surgery follow-up.
Dr. Alan Menkis, Medical Director of the regional Cardiac Sciences Program said the opening of the facility is just the latest of a series of improvements implemented since the Koshal Report.
“Since 2004 we have doubled the number of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists in Manitoba through the development of the Cardiac Sciences Program and we continue to grow,” said Dr. Menkis. “We are hiring more nurses; we have two new cardiologists starting this summer and a third catheterization lab here at St. Boniface Hospital to be operating by fall. We are also working towards replacing the catheterization lab at Health Sciences Centre.”
The new Cardiac Centre of Excellence adds more capacity to meet the need for cardiac care in Manitoba, and will help to ensure Manitobans receive cardiac surgery within the medically recommended benchmark. A recent analysis by the Canadian Institute for Health Information found that 99% of patients in Manitoba receive surgery within established benchmarks.
Dr. Michel Tétreault, President & CEO of St. Boniface Hospital said the new facilities cement St. Boniface Hospital’s position as a centre for cardiac excellence in the Province of Manitoba. “People from across the Manitoba, northwest Ontario, and from northern communities come to St. Boniface Hospital knowing they will receive the best possible care,” said Dr. Tétreault. “The quality of their experience will be improved by the brand new facility.”
In 2004, St-Boniface Hospital Foundation raised an additional $25 million for the construction of the I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute through its HeartCare Campaign. Today, the Foundation continues to raise funds to support the Cardiac Sciences Program.
“The Asper Institute was constructed using the generous donations of thousands of community supporters. Today’s announcement is possible thanks to the foundation these men and women built in 2004,” said Charles (Chuck) LaFlèche, President & CEO, and St-Boniface Hospital Foundation. “Continued support from the community allows the Foundation to purchase stateof- the-art medical equipment for the Cardiac Sciences Program, which aids them in performing their life saving work.”
Public tours of the new facility will take place immediately after the completion of the media event. For photos, click here.

Buhler Gallery launches its new exhibition
Lanscape x 2: Bill Lobchuk & Bryan Nemish
The Buhler Gallery at St. Boniface Hospital is pleased to launch its new exhibition Lanscape x 2: Bill Lobchuk & Bryan Nemish, which opened Friday, October 8, 2010, and will run until Sunday, January 11, 2011.
The exhibition features the works of Manitoba artists Bill Lobchuk and Bryan Nemish. Each paint their own perceptions of landscapes, exploring light, colour, space, tone and texture. This exhibition focuses on their painting and examines the diversities and connections between their two approaches. Lobchuk works from photographs of specific places, simultaneously drawing from his visual memory bank. Nemish, who also works from what he sees, talks of his process of inventing his landscapes. The individual powers of observation and creative exploration of these two artists are evident in the works in Landscape x 2.
Lobchuk graduated from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1966. He is perhaps best known as a printmaker. His knowledge of, and long experience in, printmaking certainly informs his painting. His colours are vibrant and his compositions clear and direct, and the dynamism and personality of the natural environment is his subject. He leaves out details and heightens his colour in order to project his passion with boldness.
Upon graduating from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1967, Nemish left for Alberta and later returned to the Winnipeg area in 1989. He reconnected with the landscape roots of his youth. His interest in the landscape harkens back to his childhood and his grandfather’s property at Lake of the Woods in Northwestern Ontario. That property, which he now owns, is his primary inspiration with its infinite variety, details and multiple vistas. Its sense of space drew him to paint the land initially, but subsequently light, colour, texture and smell have become equally critical to his art. It is the perspective he gets while canoeing that provides him with his favoured particular point of observation.
Together Nemish and Lobchuk portray the richness and variety of their individual places and interests. They provide us with multiple perspectives of seeing and understanding the natural world around us.
The gallery, located near the St. Boniface Hospital main entrance, is open to the public from
Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m and Saturday and Sunday 12 noon - 4:00 p.m.
Closed on statutory holidays. Admission is free.
